Elizabeth Ella Pallister was the fifth child of Robert Speed Pallister & Elizabeth Thubron born September 22nd, 1871 & christened October 15th, 1871 at Wallsend.
Elizabeth Ella’s mother died in 1880 & her father remarried in March 1881. At the time of the 1881 census Elizabeth Ella was living with 2 sisters, father & step-mother Hannah at James Mather St, Westoe, South Shields. Her father had now returned to being a miner.
Elizabeth Ella was still living at home in 1891 at 10 Reservoir St, Wardley, Heworth. She now had 2 younger half-sisters & a half-brother from her father’s second marriage.
In Jan-March 1897 Elizabeth Ella married Thomas Hewitt at South Shields, Co Durham. Thomas was born June 25th, 1861 at Lesbury, Northumberland, the son of Margaret & Thomas Hewitt, an agricultural labourer.
In 1901 Elizabeth Ella & Thomas were living in Drake St, Bill Quay, Heworth & Thomas was a platelayer at the railway. They had 2 children by this time – Elizabeth (3) & Margaret (2).
Elizabeth Ella & Thomas had moved to Garden House, Bill Quay by 1911 & their family had grown to include Elizabeth & Margaret, Thomas (9), Violet (6), William (4) & James (2). It was note on the census that one child had died. Thomas was described as a playelayer with the North Eastern Railway.
The 1939 register shows Elizabeth & Thomas living at 28 Brack Terrace, Felling, Gateshead. Thomas was now a retired platelayer with GNER. Strangely Elizabeth’s year of birth was given as 1887!
Elizabeth Ella died, aged 77, in July-September 1949, her death being registered at Gateshead.
